Code of Conduct
Community is one of the top reasons why triathletes love the sport of triathlon. It might seem paradoxical—after all, when we cross that finish line, we do so individually. Our times are our own. Our journeys are deeply personal. Yet, ask any triathlete about their evolution from beginner to competitor. You’ll hear about the people who made it possible: the swimmer who showed up early to refine their stroke, the cyclist who taught them how to change a flat, and the runner who showed them that most limits come from within. We may race as individuals, but we transform as a community.
This Code of Conduct exists because community-building is core to our Mission. Doing so successfully requires ongoing investment from each new generation of members. The result is a place where Ironman champions and first-time finishers train side-by-side, and where today's mentee becomes tomorrow's mentor.
We are the San Francisco Triathlon Club and these are our standards.
Who We Are
Welcoming. Creating an environment where every athlete thrives is our foundation. Share knowledge freely, pass on skills to others, and ensure both newcomers and veterans feel they belong. Our stumbles become someone else's stepping stones through the lessons we pass on.
Challenge Seekers. Growth happens just outside our comfort zones. Embrace the learning process—share those humbling training moments, celebrate each milestone, and foster an environment where pushing past yesterday's limits matters more than outpacing others.
First to Serve. Volunteers built this club and continue to make it possible. We raise our hands first when help is needed, mentor those who follow in our footsteps, and spread the transformative power of triathlon throughout the Bay Area.
How We Train
Safety First. We have a fundamental obligation to protect ourselves and others. Plan ahead, stay alert to your surroundings, and make conservative choices in uncertain conditions. We always follow traffic laws, wear appropriate safety gear, and model responsible training.
Respect the Environment. The paths we run, the roads we ride, and the waters we swim are gifts to preserve. We are stewards of the spaces we train in. Leave no trace, stay on designated paths, and help preserve our training grounds for future generations.
Support Each Other. No one gets left behind. We check in on those around us, share extra snacks/gear, and create an atmosphere where effort meets encouragement. We pride ourselves on being prepared for challenges while also supporting fellow athletes who may need assistance.
How We Lead
Professional Behavior. We maintain high standards for conduct in all club activities and communications. Harassment, discrimination, or disrespectful behavior of any kind will not be tolerated. This includes but is not limited to:
Verbal, physical, or sexual harassment
Discriminatory comments or actions
Creating a hostile or intimidating environment
Unsportsmanlike conduct
Exemplary Sportsmanship. We believe in the power of competition but are also aware of its pitfalls. Race vigorously but fairly, celebrate the successes of others, and offer support to those who struggle. Show respect for officials, volunteers, the public, and fellow athletes.
Responsible Representation. We represent the club in every interaction, most visibly during club events or when wearing club apparel. We are ambassadors of our values in club communications, on social media, in public training spaces, and on race courses. Our individual actions reflect on all of us.
Reporting and Enforcement
If there is a Code of Conduct violation, these are our procedures for responding. We hope to never need them, but every community needs ways to uphold its standards. This system is not meant for simple interpersonal disagreements. We trust our members’ judgment in handling such disagreements maturely and distinguishing them from conduct that requires Board intervention.
Reporting Procedure
Report incidents to the Board of Directors via conduct@sftriclub.org. If the incident involves a board member, report it in writing to two uninvolved board members. If the incident involves criminal behavior, also report it to the appropriate authorities.
Include the date, time, location, and description of the incident.
All reports will be handled strictly confidentially. Reporters will be protected from retaliation.
The Board will provide an initial response within 48 hours.
Resolution Process
The Board will rapidly investigate all reported incidents. Reports of serious violations may result in immediate suspension from club activities and communications while the investigation proceeds.
All involved parties will have an opportunity to present their perspective.
A Board vote (with recusals as appropriate) will decide the consequences.
Consequences
Minor infractions: verbal and written warning
Repeated misconduct: suspension of membership privileges by simple majority vote of the Board of Directors
Serious violations: termination of membership and exclusion from all club activities and communications by three-fifths majority vote of the Board of Directors
No refunds will be provided for suspended or terminated memberships. Appeals for any decision must be submitted in writing; must include substantial, novel evidence; and require a three-fifths majority Board vote for any updated decision.
Commitment
By joining the San Francisco Triathlon Club, you commit to upholding these standards. This is a special place. We’re excited to see how you will grow and contribute to our community. And we will always be cheering for you at the finish line. 💚
